Darjeeling – Sikkim – Kalimpong

Monasteries and tea plantations in the eastern Himalayas

In the eastern Himalayas, nestled between Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan, lie Darjeeling, Sikkim, and Kalimpong. These three regions in northeastern India captivate visitors with Buddhist monasteries, lush green tea plantations, and authentic mountain villages. And with them, always present in the background, stands the majestic 8,586-meter-high Kanchenjunga massif—the third highest mountain in the world—often shrouded in clouds, yet a constant companion.

You will visit renowned tea plantations in Darjeeling and Sikkim and gain insight into the cultivation and processing of their famous teas. In colorful monasteries, you’ll immerse yourself in the spiritual world of the eastern Himalayas, long influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Ride a historic steam train through the imposing mountain landscape, stroll through vibrant markets, and discover the fascinating wildlife of the Himalayas. Once a hub for mule caravans along the Silk Road, Kalimpong is still home to talented artisans from Bhutan, India, and China working in its charming provincial town.

If Ladakh, at over 3,000 meters, feels too high, this journey is a wonderful alternative. In the first days, you’ll be at altitudes between 2,000 and 2,200 meters, and later between 1,800 and 1,500 meters above sea level. Although these are moderate altitudes, stable health and good physical condition are necessary to fully enjoy the trip.
